Death Comes To Former Local Man
John A Buck, former resident of San Rafael, and for many years an outstanding figure in the business circles of San Francisco, died at his home in that city last Friday night following a stroke of apoplexy. He was 82 years of age.
The life of John Buck was a remarkable example of success. Arriving in San Francisco at the age of 16, without funds, he took a position as clerk in a little grocery store. After a few months he and Nicholas Ohlandt formed a partnership and engaged in the charcoal business, one of the partners tending the furnace while the other delivered the product. That was the commencement of the firm, which later assumed leadership in various successful commercial enterprises. In later years he became president of the Hutchinson Plantation Company of the Hawaiian Islands, the Honolulu Plantation Company, the Paauhau Plantation Company, the Halakau Plantation Company and the San Francisco Savings & Loan Society. He was vice-president of the Matson Navigation Company, the National Ice & Cold Storage Company and the Honolulu Consolidated Oil Company, and director of the United Railroads, the Pacific Vinegar and Pickle Works and several other large corporations.
His son, John Buck Jr., was associated with his father in many of his important enterprises, and, as was his father, is well known in Marin county. The funeral was held Monday in San Francisco.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Buck and four children, John Jr. and Walter Buck, Mrs. Harry E. Wright and Mrs. Charles Hufschmidt. The Buck residence is one of the prettiest homes in San Rafael.
