ANDREW M. DEWEY

Funeral for Andrew M. Dewey of San Rafael, a retired operating engineer and former San Rafael policeman, will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Monte’s Mission Chapel mortuary in San Rafael.

Dewey died Saturday at a local hospital following a brief illness. He was 75.

Dewey came to Marin as a young man after moving to California from Kansas while in his teens. He served as a San Rafael policeman for several years and was involved in a celebrated case in which he and another policeman were kidnapped by two escaped San Quentin convicts.

The two men were off duty and reportedly assisting in the search for the two escapees when they were kidnapped by the convicts. They were held for several hours while the kidnappers drove toward the Sierra. They were let go and the two convicts headed for Southern California, where they were later shot to death by lawmen.

Dewey went to work at Marinship as a crane operator during World War II and worked for construction companies following the war. He spent many years working for the Ghilotti construction company in San Rafael before retiring about eight years ago.

He was a native of Iowa.

He was the communications officer for Civil Air Patrol Squadron No. 42, a member of Sons In Retirement group, served three times as president of the Marin Rod and Gun Club, was a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 3, the Westerneers Recreational Vehicles Club and served twice as president of the Petaluma Search and Rescue Association Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Dewey; a son, Dean D. Dewey of San Rafael; a sister, Lottie Lawson of Santa Rosa; and two grandchildren.

Burial will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. The family prefers memorial gifts to the Marin County chapter of the American Heart Association. Visitation is at the mortuary Tuesday after 10 a.m.
