JANET GRAHAM DEWING

The funeral for Janet Graham Dewing, 71, of Kentfield, a noted concert pianist, will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ross.

Mrs. Dewing died Friday at her home after a long illness.

She toured in Europe and the United States and specialized in classical music. She received critical acclaim for her playing in both Europe and t he United States.

She was a graduate of Berkeley High School and Mills College. She studied with Artur Schnabel in pre-war Berlin, where she was instrumental in helping several Jewish families escape the Nazis.

She also studied in Germany with George Gruenberg, who now lives in San Francisco.

After retiring from the concert stage 17 years ago, Mrs. Dewing gave recitals at her home and taught.

She was a descendant of the Bancroft family of Berkeley. Mrs. Dewing was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ross, and was active at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco.

She was the widow of Andrew Spalding Dewing, an art expert. Surviving is a sister, Cecilia B. Graham.

Inurnment will be private. The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Marin, 77 Mark Drive, Suite 6, San Rafael, 94903, or a favorite charity.
