MARGARET N. REDDING

Margaret N. Redding, 78, a lifelong resident of San Rafael, died Sunday in a local hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Redding retired in 1960 after teaching for more than 40 years in San Rafael schools.

After retiring, she worked for 15 years as a part-time librarian at St. Raphael’s Church

In addition to her activities as a member of St. Raphael’s, she was a member of the National Association of Retired Teacher.

Mrs. Redding graduated form San Rafael High School and from San Francisco State Teachers College. Her first job was in Marysville, where she taught nine children in nine different grades.

Later, she taught at the old one-room Dixie School north of San Rafael and then was principal of Tiburon Grammar School. She once attempted to figure out the total number of students she taught during her career, but gave up after she reached 5,000.

Mrs. Redding’s parents, the late Ellen C. and Edward O. Smith, settled in San Rafael about 1890. Her husband, Charles P. Redding, a correctional officer at San Quentin State Prison, died in 1965. He was foreman of the furniture factory when he retired after 23 years on the prison’s staff.

Mrs. Redding is survived by two brothers, William F. Redding of San Rafael and Dudley Smith of Santa Rosa, and two sisters, Alice Crane and Veronica Smith, both of San Rafael.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Raphael’s Church. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Monte’s Mission Chapel, San Raf
