ADOLPH KOENIG, 78
Former pub owner
Adolph “Dutch” Koenig, 78, retired owner of a one-time San Rafael pub, died today at a local convalescent hospital after a long illness.
Koenig, of San Rafael, once owned the Seven-Fifty-One Club at Fourth and C streets. It since has gone out of business.
He was born in Las Gallinas (Santa Venetia) and attended schools in San Rafael and Heald’s Business College.
During World War I he served in the Army.
After the war Koenig operated a cigar stand along Fourth Street in San Rafael and for a time was in the bail bond business.
He also worked for the U.S. marshal’s office in San Francisco, transporting prisoners.
He also was a branch manager for the Buffalo Brewing Co. after prohibition was repealed, and during World War II worked in the plant production department at Marinship.
After the war, Koenig worked as a bartender and after several jobs would up at the Seven-Fifty-One Club.
He was a 56-year member of the San Rafael Elks Club and was an avid sports fan.
Surviving is a niece, Marjorie E. Lear of San Rafael.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Raphael’s Church, San Rafael. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday at Williams and Heffernan Mortuary, San Rafael. Burial will be at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno.
