Robert Kappenmann Passes From Life
Well known and liked by a host of friends in Marin County, Robert Kappenmann, prominent San Rafael businessman, owner of a candy store and ice cream parlor at the corner of Fourth and C streets in this city, committed suicide Saturday night at his home above his business quarters.
Having closed his store, he retired for the night, and when his brother, Emil, who slept in an adjoining room, came to awaken him Sunday morning, he found his lifeless body, Kappenmann having shot himself. Authorities reconstructing the tragedy believe that he laid on the bed, placed the revolver in his mouth and fired the shot that took his life. He left no word as to the reason for his suicide, but it was well known by friends that he was worried over financial troubles.
News of his death came as a great shock to those who knew and liked him, for he was born and raised in San Rafael and was a member of a pioneer Marin County family. He leaves a mother, Mrs. Margaretha Kappenmann; two brothers, Emil and Charles J. Kappenmann; a sister, Mrs. Regina Messner; a nephew, Joseph T. Kappenmann, and three nieces – Mrs. Gwendolyn Peterson and Marin and Elizabeth Claire Kappenmann – mourn his passing. He was the son of the late Joseph Kappenmann and a brother of the late Joseph A. Kappenmann.
Hundreds of friends attended his funeral services, held Tuesday at the parlors of Keaton & Dusel, under the auspices of the American Legion, as he was a member of the old Company D, national guard. His remains were laid to rest at the Tamalpais Mausoleum.
