Eleanor “Toddy” Dawson Johnson, a nationally ranked women’s tennis player, died yesterday in a local hospital after collapsing at her Kentfield home. She was 60.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of New York City but moved to the Bay Area as a child. She had lived in Marin since 1948.
She was a graduate of the Anna Head School and the University of California at Berkeley where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She was a nationally ranked women’s tennis player and had competed in many tournaments including the Forest Hills International Championships in which she once received the sportsmanship award.
Mrs. Johnson was active in sports and tennis circles and also was a member of the San Francisco Junior League, the Marin Charitable Foundation, the Marin Garden Club and the DeYoung Museum.
She is survived by her husband, Harry D. Johnson, an insurance executive, and four children, Lilia Ticen of St. Helena, Heidi Ticen of Napa, Ward Johnson of San Diego and Harry D. Johnson IV of Novato.
Mrs. Johnson also leaves her mother, Eleanor Abbott of Piedmont; a sister, Barbara Hartson of Phoenix; a brother, H. Ward Dawson Jr. of Oakland, and two grandchildren.
