MARIA F. DeSOUZA
Maria F. DeSouza, a Marin resident for more than 50 years, died Sunday at a local hospital after a long illness.
A native of Sao Jorge Island in the Azores, Mrs. DeSouza, 94, came to the United States in 1911 and married Manuel J. DeSouza in 1915 at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael.
They operated dairies first in Nevada and then in Olema in Marin. In 1942 they moved to Novato, where DeSouza worked at Hamilton Air Force Base as a civilian employee. He died in 1966.
She was a member of Our Lady of Loretto Church in Novato and the fraternal organization S.P.R.S.I. Council No. 94 of Novato.
Surviving are her three daughters, Mary D. Nunes of Santa Rosa and Caroline and Bernadette DeSouza, both of Novato; a brother, Jorge Fontes of the Azores; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Novato. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be held at Redwood Chapel Funeral Home in Novato until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in San Rafael.
