ELOISE MAYS

Eloise Mays of San Rafael, a retired teacher and former rural supervisor in the Marin County Schools Office, died Friday at a local hospital after a long illness.

Miss Mays retired in 1968 after teaching at the Mira Vista School in Richmond for 12 years.

A graduate of the University of Southern California, she began her teaching career at Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County, and moved to the Marin County Schools office in 1937.

After 12 years she left to teach education at the University of San Francisco for five years and supervised the student teaching program.

Miss Mays also had been supervisor of summer schools for the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of Nevada at Reno and the University of San Francisco in Santa Rosa.

She held a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Miss Mays had been a resident of Marin since 1937. She was a native of Tennessee.

She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, historian of the Marin County Retired Teachers Association, a past president of the American Association of University of University Women in Marin, a member of the investment group of t he AAUW, a member of the California Teachers Association, the Whistlestoppers, Marin Druids, San Rafael Improvement Club and California Teachers Association.

Surviving is a sister, Marguerite Twihaus of Tulsa, Okla.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Monte’s Mission Chapel, San Rafael. Entombment will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael. The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to Kaiser Home Health Care in care of Wylma Cunningham, 12 Elkin Court, San Rafael, CA., 94901, or to the Marin County Retired Teachers scholarship fund.
