Death Summons For Prominent Citizen

Manuel T. Freitas, president of the Bank of San Rafael and one of Marin county’s most prominent citizens, passed away early Wednesday morning at t he Hotel St. George in Santa Cruz from pneumonia, which set in immediately after he had suffered a stroke of apoplexy the preceding Thursday.

William P. Murray, his secretary, confidant, and closer to him perhaps in his financial transaction than any other man, was at the bedside when death came, as were all the members of the family.

Arrangements were made to removed the remains at once to San Francisco for the funeral services which will be held Saturday at 9:30 o’clock at St. Mary’s Cathedral, with the celebration of a solemn requiem high mass by Rev. William Fleming of St. Raphael’s church. Burial will be made in Holy Cross cemetery, where rests the body of the late Mrs. Freitas, his wife.

The deceased was a remarkable man in many ways. Arriving here in early youth from the Azores Islands with little more than the clothing he wore, he overcame the obstacles that beset the path of the newcomers and achieved a high position. Wealth and respect of his countrymen and of big men in the country of his adoption were his when his life’s labor ended. He held the position also of Vice Consul of Portugal in San Francisco.

He had been in ill health for several years past, but despite that fact he had attended thoroughly to all his wide business interests, which embraced banking, dairying and ranching. The Freitas Home Ranch north of San Rafael is one of the most beautiful country places in the county. It was there that the large family of children were reared and where Mr. Freitas spent the happiest days of his long life after success had rewarded his efforts.

In addition to the positions mentioned, Mr. Freitas held other important offices. He was a director in the Bank of Italy and the Bank of Novato, and was prominent in the councils of the diary and milk associations of the state. He was also an important figure in the Portuguese fraternal societies. For many years he was chairman of the State Dairy Bureau.

The children who survive him are Manuel T. Freitas Jr., Carlo R., Edward, Louis and Walter Freitas, Mrs. Marie Crane, Mrs. Rose Rose and Mrs. Helen Wright. He was a brother of Joaquin, Antone T., Marie and Mariana Freitas, Mrs. Martha Borba and Mrs. Rose Vieira. He was 70 years of age.
