Pugilist Known Here Commits Suicide

Tired of his life of poverty and illness, Freddie Bogan, former noted pugilist and recalled by many San Rafael people as the proprietor of a poolroom and soft drink place at Third and B street a few years ago, committed suicide Monday night in San Francisco by turning on the gas in a cheap little room on Guerrero street.

While waiting for death to come Bogan penned a long letter to his nephew, who had been taking care of him since his friends of more prosperous days had deserted him.

Bogan rose to fame with his battle with Dal Hawkins. The two men fought for 75 rounds, when the referee stopped them and told them to return the following night and finish. When they entered the ring the following evening Bogan knocked out Hawkins after 15 rounds of whirlwind fighting. He had fought more than 100 ring battles and had promoted many athletic contests and discovered and managed several famous pugilists, one of them being the late Stanley Ketchel.
