JOHANNES PETERSEN

Johannes (Joe) Petersen, 76, of San Rafael, who had been a partner in C. Grosjean & Co., a specialty grocery store in San Rafael, died Saturday in a local hospital after a heart attack.

Petersen, who was semi-retired as a property manager, had been with the grocery store for many years until it closed in 1952.

He was a member of a pioneer family that settled in Blake’s Landing on Tomales Bay and was a native and lifelong resident of San Rafael.

Petersen had served on the San Rafael Planning and Beautification Committee in its early years.

He was a member of the San Rafael Rotary Club, San Rafael Elks Lodge, 1108, Marin Lodge 191, Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite, Royal Arch Masons, Islam Temple Shrine, Redwood Empire Council, Knights Templers 73, Hi Twelve, Sons in Retirement, Marin Shrine Club and Marin Commandry.

Surviving are his wife, Gwendolyn, of San Rafael; two sons, Alan Moore Petersen of Los Angeles and Robert J. Petersen of Greenbrae; and three grandchildren.

Private family service was held today at Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael. Inurnment will be at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael. The family prefers that memorial contributions be to Shriners Children’s Hospital or a favorite charity.
