ROY R. RHODES

The funeral for Roy R. Rhodes, 83, a 28-year resident of San Rafael, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Monte’s Mission Chapel in San Rafael.

Rhodes was found dead at his home Friday.

The Wooster, Ohio, native was a veteran of three wars. He served on the Sana Rafael Parks and Recreation Commission, was a nominee for the outstanding senior citizen award in 1977 and was active in many civic and fraternal organizations.

He moved to Freedom, Pa., as a boy, later serving as the city’s postmaster. In 1940, he moved to Upper Darby, Pa., where he was a federal mail clerk with the Railway Mail Service.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and in the U.S. Navy during World War II and t he Korean War.

He came to the Bay Area when he was in the Navy during World War II and later settled in San Rafael in 1950.

He retired from the Railway Mail Service in 1955, and later became a custodian for the Marin Masonic Building, head of supplies for Crocker Bank and parking superintendent for the Bank of Marin, all in San Rafael.

Rhodes was a member of Marin Masonic Lodge Local 191, was the sentinel of San Rafael Local 215 of the Order of the Eastern Star and advisory board member of the San Rafael Rainbow Assembly Local 195.

He also was a member of the Wilkens American Legion Post 37, the sergeant-at-arms of the Marin barracks of World War I Veterans, a charter member of the Goldenaires, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He also had belonged to the Methodist Church of San Rafael and had served as an elder of the San Rafael First Presbyterian Church.

He served on the parks and recreation commission of 1969 and 1970.

He is survived by a son, Richard W. of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a daughter, Rebecca “Bunnie” Dotson of San Rafael; two sisters, Hazel Hedland of San Diego and Frances Baumann of Pittsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Carol Rhodes of Memphis, Tenn., and Willard Rhodes of Freedom, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Masonic memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Monte’s Mission Chapel at 1415 Third St. in San Rafael.

The family prefers memorial gifts to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children at 1701 19th Ave., San Francisco.
