“Uncle Hank” Bass Has Passed Away
Death Calls A Lovable Character From Our Midst

Late last Tuesday afternoon Uncle Hank Bass, as he was familiarly known, succumbed after a short attack of pneumonia and died. Uncle Hank came to California fifty-three years ago and to this county over thirty-five years ago.

During all of his long residence here he had been engaged in the hack business, owning half a dozen. It is usual to say of the dead that they were popular, but in the case of Uncle Hank, it is but stating half the fact when it is said that he was popular – he was more, every man, woman and child knew him and loved him. If he had an enemy in the world no one every knew. During all t he years of his residence here there is not a person who can say that they ever heard a harsh word spoken of him. Never married, he had a peculiar love for children, and many a little lishing (sic) tot will miss Uncle Hank, his sight and kind words.

He leaves three sisters and a number of nieces and nephews. The sisters are: Mrs. Harriet B. Shaver, San Rafael; Mrs. Marcio Sbergren of Eureka, and Mrs. Lucy G. Wade of Woodward, Iowa. The estate is large and is believed to have been left to his relatives. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Presbyterian church. The church was crowded with people who came to pay their last respects to Henry B. Bass.
