CATHERINE F. TIMONY

Catherine Frances Timony of San Rafael, a lifelong resident of San Rafael and member of one of the city’s earliest families, died Sunday at a local hospital following a long illness. She was 95.

Mrs. (sic) Timony was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Timony. Her father came to San Rafael in 1874, only a few years after it became a city. The family lived on property in the Lucas Valley where the Fireman’s Fund insurance building now stands.

She attended San Rafael grammar school and San Rafael High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of California at Berkeley.

Her father started in the liquor business and later worked for the county as roadmaster on the Point San Pedro Road where he collected poll taxes. He also operated a store on what is not Lincoln Avenue. He owned property on Lincoln Avenue and following the 1906 earthquake build three homes there.

Mrs. Timony taught at the Coleman School in San Rafael when it opened and had many prominent San Rafael residents as students, including former Mayor C. Paul Bettini.

She also taught at the Fourth Street School. She retired in 1951.

She was a lifelong member of St. Raphael’s Church, a member of the California Alumni Association, the Marin County division of the National Retired Teachers Association, the California Teachers Association, the Marin Historical Society and Catholic Social Services of Marin.

She is survived by numerous cousins and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Church in San Rafael. The rosary will be recited Tuesday at 8 p.m. at St. Raphael’s. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
