PAUL A. MILLER
Paul A. Miller, San Rafael educator for whom a football field was named, died Friday at the age of 71.
Miller succumbed at Marin General Hospital following a history of heart problems. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo, with interment to follow at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.
A native of Salinas, Miller came to San Rafael in 1931 after graduating from Santa Clara University and embarked on a career as teacher, coach and athletic director at San Rafael High School. During the next 25 years he coached every sport, guiding the Bulldog lightweight football team to 28 straight wins at one point and the varsity to 14 straight victories between 1955 and 1957.
In 1957 Miller gave up coaching and turned his entire attention to teaching mathematics until his retirement in 1973. That summer the school board moved on a proposal by students and former students and renamed the San Rafael High football field Paul A. Miller Stadium.
Miller is survived by his wife, Vivian, sons Gerald and Harry, both of San Rafael, sister Helen Caletti, also of San Rafael, and four grandchildren.
His sons have established the Paul A. Miller Athletic Memorial Fund which they hope will become a perpetual fund for the athletic department at San Rafael High. Memorial gifts can be sent to the fund c/o Bank of Marin.
