ROSE FREITAS ROSE, 80
Rose Freitas Rose of San Rafael, a lifelong Marin resident and member of an early day ranching family, died Friday in a local hospital after a short illness. She was 80.
Mrs. Rose was the second eldest of eight children born to Manuel and Maria Freitas. The father came to this country from the Azores Islands and in addition to ranching, he was a banker, organizing and serving as president of the old Bank of San Rafael.
Mrs. Rose was born in the main house of the Freitas home ranch, which is now the site of St. Isabella’s Church in the center of Terra Linda. She was reared at the ranch and spent her winters in San Rafael at the family home on Fifth Avenue.
She was educated at Dominican Convent and on Nov. 21, 1917, she married the family chauffeur, Joseph Rose.
She continued to live in Marin County, and Rose ran some of the family ranches, including the Upper Ranch, now the Lucas Valley, as well as the Home Dairy, the site of the present Terra Linda.
Rose died in 1942.
Mrs. Rose was active in numerous organizations. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Catholic Social Services, St. Vincent’s School Auxiliary, Nazareth House Auxiliary, the women’s guild of Blessed Sacrament Parish and the Dominican Alumnae.
She is survived by a son, Robert F. Rose of Pasadena; a daughter, Jean Rose Forde of San Rafael; a sister, Helen F. Tichenor of San Rafael; four brothers, Manuel T. Freitas and Judge Carlos R. Freitas, both of San Rafael; Louis G Freitas of Borrego Springs and Walter F. Freitas of Pebble Beach; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass and burial will be private.
The family prefers memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
