Soldier Drowns And Companion Disappears
Considerable mystery surrounds the finding of the body last Sunday of Private E. B. Campbell on the beach near Fort Barry, with evidence that he met death by drowning, and the discovery of the fact that Private Ray Madison, with whom Campbell left the fort, was missing.
The body was brought to San Rafael by Coroner J. Ray Keaton, and Dr. J. H. Kuser, autopsy surgeon, stated that death was due to drowning. The Fort Barry officials immediately started a search for Private Madison, notifying the San Francisco police and other authorities in the bay region. Up to this time, however, no trace of Madison has been found. It is surmised by the army officials that Madison also met death by drowning while he and his companion were gathering mussels, and that Madison’s body was carried away.
