EDWARD HALLIN

Sausalito – Edward Hallin of Sausalito, believed the last surviving captain of the pre-World War II Bay ferry fleet, died Monday at a local hospital after a short illness. He was 90.

Hallin, who was born and reared in San Francisco, went to sea as a teen-ager on lumber boats off the Mendocino coast.

He served both in World War I and World War II as a Navy officer, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander. During the first was he saw service at Pearl Harbor and Manchuria and in the 1940s he was with the Military Sea Transport, both as a Navy officer and later as a civilian. He retired in 1955.

During the time between the wars, he was a captain on the ferries which shuttled people and autos from San Francisco to Oakland and Sausalito. He made the last runs to both those destinations.

Hallin was a 50-year member of the Native Sons of the Golden West and also belonged to American Legion Post 284, Sons in Retirement and Master Mates and Pilots.

He had moved to Sausalito in 1922, where he lived since. His wife, Flora, died 11 years ago.

Surviving are three sons, Edward J. Hallin of San Rafael, Robert R. Hallin of Modesto and Arthur W. Hallin of Corte Madera; one sister, Lulu Murray of Belmont; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation at the mortuary is after 7 tonight.

The family prefers memorial contributions to Whistlestop in San Rafael.
