Mrs. Margaret Coit Borne to Her Last Resting Place Today
The life of another of Marin County’s pioneer women came to a close last Monday night, when Mrs. Margaret Elliott Coit, answered Death’s call, at 79 years of age.
She suffered a stroke five days previous, rallied slightly, but resistance had weakened. A strong constitution, which had made Mrs. Coit active, throughout her life, could not stand the shock, and she passed away at the home, where she had resided for many years.
Funeral service was held this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. from the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with interment at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery under the direction of Keaton & Dusel.
The services were attended by sorrowing relatives, friends and club members, and floral tributes were profuse.
Mrs. Coit possessed to a high degree and enterprising and accommodating disposition, which endeared her to all. No task for the good of the community and deserving individuals was too arduous for Mrs. Coit. She left nothing to others, and her energy, kindled that rare flame in others and t hey enjoyed working with her for the good of the community.
Always enthusiastic, courteous, kind, considerate to others, she enjoyed life, and imbued others with courage and willingness to work. Defeat was not in Mrs. Coit’s make-up and she retained that spirit and energy up to the time of the fatal shock a few days previous to her passing.
She worked as an active member of the San Rafael Improvement Club, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Guild, the Red Cross, and Music Chest and many other organizations.
Many years ago she enjoyed a world voyage around the world and came back happy, and healthy, to again plunge into work of the organizations of the city.
Mrs. Coit was a native of Canada. She came to California as a girl of 15, and the family took up residence in this city. She married here, but her husband passed away over 50 years ago. Three weeks ago numerous friends and relatives called at Mrs. Coit’s home to congratulate her on her 79th birthday.
She leaves a son, Tryon Coit, San Rafael business man, and a grandson, Charles Coit, Jr. She is a sister of Col. William Elliott, Tom and Nelson Elliott and the late John Pierce Elliott, all of whom have been associated in business in Marin County.
