MARGARET CALHOUN FOSTER

Greenbrae – A private family service will be held for Margaret Calhoun Foster of Greenbrae, a founder of the Planned Parenthood movement in Marin.

Mrs. Foster died Sunday at her home. She was 91.

She was born in Georgia and came to San Francisco with her parents, Patrick and Sarah Calhoun, as a young girl. She was married to Paul S. Foster, who died in 1959.

He was the son of A. W. Foster, founder of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. Paul Foster operated a large ranch and lumber holdings in Northern California.

Mrs. Foster was one of 13 women who founded the Marin Maternal Health Organization to provide women with information about birth control. Mrs. Foster and the other women braved the threat of arrest and jail to distribute birth control information.

The organization, which they started 50 years ago, later joined the national Planned Parenthood organization.

She also was active in the Sunnyhills group, Northgate Group of the Marin Art and Garden Center and the Marin Garden Club.

She is survived by three sons, Paul Scott Foster Jr. of San Francisco, Patrick Arthur Foster of Ross and Robert Nicholson Foster of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. Warren Wick of Ohio; a brother, Patrick Calhoun Jr. of Kentucky; and 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family prefers memorial donations to Moya Library Guild of the Marin Art and Garden Center, Ross, or a favorite charity.
