LOLA HANZEL

A private memorial service for Lola Hanzel of Greenbrae, a Marin resident for more than 25 years, was held Thursday.

Mrs. Hanzel died Saturday at a local hospital. She was 55.

She was born in Chicago and was raised there. She moved to California in 1952 and lived briefly in Los Angeles and San Francisco before moving to Marin.

She worked for about 10 years as head of a volunteer organization for the San Francisco office of the American Civil Liberties Union. She also served on the organization’s board of directors.

She was active in various groups opposed to the war in Vietnam, the death penalty and nuclear power.

She is survived by two sons, David and Milton Hanzel of Greenbrae; two daughters, Lynn and Cele Hanzel of Novato; a sister, Myra Ann Gable of Davis; and three grandchildren.

The family prefers memorial donations to the Lola Hanzel Fund, care of the American Civil Liberties Union, San Francisco.
