Col. WILLIAM BOYLE

A Mass of Christian Burial for retired Army Col. William A. Boyle of San Francisco, a member of an early San Rafael family, will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius Church, San Francisco.

Boyle, 93, died Monday at home following a brief illness.

Boyle was born in San Rafael and graduated from Hitchcock Military in San Rafael. During his senior year studying engineering at Stanford University, he helped equip a train which the university sent up the North Coast to instruct ranchers on how to care for cattle. The experience triggered his interest in medicine, and he went on to get his medical degree at the University of California.

Boyle began his Army career during World War I. After the war, he helped build Clark Field in the Philippines and a military base in Puerto Rico. Retiring from the Army, he went into psychiatry and worked at state mental health facilities in Modesto and Ukiah. He went into private practice in Marin and San Francisco after retiring from state service.

He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Berg, and a sister, Sister Gabriel, Order of Discalced Carmelites, Santa Clara.

Burial will be in Russian River District Cemetery, Ukiah. The rosary will be recited tonight at 8 at Carew and English Mortuary, San Francisco.

His family asked that memorial gifts go to donors’ favorite charities.
