EARL WILLIS BURNS
Florist
Services will be Sunday in Palm Springs for Earl Willis Burns, whose family runs what may be the oldest continuing family business in the county, Burns Florist of San Rafael.
Mr. Burns died Tuesday at 78.
The family business was founded in 1908 by his grandfather. It is currently owned and managed by Debbie Cain, daughter of Mr. Burns’ brother, Robin Burns.
Mr. Burns was a florist throughout his life, but was forced to retire in 1986 due to poor health, said his wife of 54 years, June Burns. He suffered a stroke, and in January 1991 the couple moved to Palm Springs to be closer to family there.
He served two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was active in FTD Florist activities as well as the Marin Lodge #191 F.&.A.M., San Rafael High School Alumni Association, and the Marin Organ Club. He was a 39-year member of the San Rafael Rotary Club and a life member of the San Rafael Elks Lodge and Marin Historical Society.
Survivors include a son, Earl Burns Jr. of Palm Springs; a daughter, Carol Coulter of Palm Desert; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
Private services will be Sunday in Palm Springs Mortuary, 4707 E. Sunny Dunes Road.
