SAMUEL SWADESH
Private funeral services are pending for Samuel Swadesh, 66, a Tiburon resident since 1964 and onetime Mill Valley City Council candidate.
He died on Saturday at a local hospital.
A native of Chicago, Ill., he had moved from Chicago to Mill Valley in 1951.
He was a chemist working in research and development for several Bay Area firms. In Chicago, he had worked in the chemical division of the Quaker Oats Co.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago, a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin.
When he first came to Mill Valley, he was active in community affairs. He was a Mill Valley City Council candidate in 1956 and was active in the Mill Valley Commuters Club.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Swadesh of Tiburon; a sister, Revelle Magidovitch of South Carolina; and one granddaughter.
Arrangements are being handled by Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley. The family prefers memorial gifts to the Landmarks Society or the Nature Conservancy.
