Captain John Briant, a fisherman known in Sausalito as “French John,” was drowned Tuesday at Noyo Inlet on the Mendocino coast when he was pulled over the side of his launch Juliet by an anchor chair. His companion, George Phillips, an 18-year-old Oakland boy, tied Briant’s dog to the wheel post and battle to keep the launch from capsizing in the storm. He was rescued by the United States Coast Guard at Pt. Arena and is now en route to San Francisco on the steamer Cauantenoc.
