BERNARD M. KEATING
Bernard M. “Barney” Keating, lifelong Marin resident and member of a pioneer family, died today in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 72.
Keating retired seven years ago after a career as an insurance underwriter. He had worked for the state Workmen’s Compensation Fund, California Compensation Insurance Co. and was supervising underwriter for the California Insurance Rating Bureau at the time of his retirement.
Since his retirement he had been active in SIRS.
Keating was born in Sausalito, the son of the late John and Ellen Keating. John Keating served as Marin County sheriff for five terms and w hen he died during his last tern in 1929, his widow was named to the post.
Keating’s grandparents, Richard and Elizabeth Keating, came across the plains from New England in a wagon train in 1862. They settled in Marin, where they leased 555 acres in Ignacio from Maria Pacheco, widow of Ignacio Pacheco. Richard Keating was Ignacio’s first postmaster.
Bernard Keating attended schools in Marin, graduating from San Rafael High School and with the first class from College of Marin in 1928. He was on the football and basketball teams at the college.
Keating is survived by his wife, Margaret of the family home in Terra Linda; his brother, retired Superior Court Judge Thomas F. Keating of San Rafael, and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Isabell’s Church in Terra Linda. The rosary will be recited Sunday at 8 p.m. at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The family prefers memorial contributions to St. Vincent’s School.
