ALFRED G. SCHINDLER

A funeral for Alfred G. Schindler, president of Gateway Enterprises of Sausalito, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel, Mill Valley.

Schindler, 61, died Thursday after collapsing at home.

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Indiana and did graduate work in design at the Chicago Art Institute.

He served as the Army’s assistant port director in Nome, Alaska, during World War II.

He worked for many years in the furniture manufacturing business. He was president of Gateway Enterprises, a manufacturing representative in Sausalito. He started the firm in 1958.

He had lived in Marin for 27 years. He was a well-known tennis player and an avid golfer. He became the first individual to sponsor a tournament at the Mill Valley Golf Club this spring.

He is survived by his wife, Margery Schindler of Sausalito; a son, Peter A. Schindler of Mill Valley; a daughter, Heidi L. Schindler of San Anselmo; his parents, Peter and Alice Schindler of Buena Park, Orange Park (sic); and a sister, Ellen S. Singleton of Buena Park.

Burial will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael. Friends may call for visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
