RAYMOND E. GILBERT

A funeral for Raymond E. Gilbert, of Cotati, a former deputy district attorney for Marin County, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rohnert Park.

Mr. Gilbert died Friday in a drowning accident while on vacation in Hawaii. He was 41.

Mr. Gilbert, a native of Richmond, had lived in Cotati for 10 years. Previously he was a resident of Novato.

Mr. Gilbert received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in Utah and earned his law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco.

In 1971, he joined the Marin County District Attorney’s office. Six years later, he left the district attorney’s office to enter private practice in Novato. Two years ago, he became senior trial counsel for First Interstate Bank.

Mr. Gilbert was an active member of the First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rohnert Park. He served as a primary teacher and on the Bishopric of the first ward. He also served as high counsel for San Rafael Stake of the church.

He was a member of the Human Services Commission for the city of Cotati. An Eagle Scout as a youth, he was a member of the Miwok council of Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Gilbert was also president of the Rancho Cotate Little League and served as a coach for both Little League and soccer.

He was a member of the California Bar Association.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Gilbert of Cotati; two sons, Kevin and Michael Gilbert of Cotati; two daughters, Kristen and Melinda Gilbert of Cotati; his parents, Ellsworth and Augusta Gilbert of Pinole; and two brothers, Bruce Gilbert of Rohnert Park and Dennis Gilbert of Pinole.

Friends may call after noon Wednesday at the Parent-Sorensen Mortuary in Petaluma. Burial will be in Cypress Hill Memorial Park in Petaluma.

His family prefers that contributions go to the Miwok Council, Boy Scouts of America, 840 Western Ave., Petaluma, 94952.
