ROLAND ‘ART’ REED

A memorial service for Roland “Art” Reed of Mill Valley, who in 1978 was honored as Marin’s Outstanding Senior Citizen, will be held a 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Tiburon.

Mr. Reed died at his home in Strawberry on Friday, his 78th birthday.

A longtime federal employee, Mr. Reed lived in Marin for many years.

He was born in Orwigsburg, Pa.

His 38 years working for the federal government included stints with the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Agriculture.

He was an investigator of criminal acts against the government.

He had taught school in his earlier years and worked as a social worker for the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Relief Agency.

After Mr. Reed retired in 1972, he spent much of his time helping others.

He recruited musicians and singers fro fellow members of the Sons In Retirement to form the “Sirenaders,” which performed for handicapped and blind people and residents of rest homes and convalescent hospitals.

In 1978, he was elected as Marin’s Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year for his work with the Sirenaders and other projects.

Mr. Reed also was active in sports and was a member of the Tamalpais Pistol Club and Marin Rod & Gun Club. He was an ardent fisherman.

He was an active member of ReAct Shortwave Communications, National Police Officers Association, Association of Federal Investigators, National Association of
Retired Federal Employees, and U. S. Navy Sons In Retirement. He was an honorary member of the Declarations Guild at the Marin Art and Garden Center.

Mr. Reed also served as a ruling elder and a deacon in Westminster Presbyterian Church where he headed its church and society commission.

He was secretary and treasurer of the Southern Marin Day Care Center.

His survivors include his wife, Margaret Reed of Strawberry, and stepson Dean Brennan of White Fish, Mont.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to the Art and Margaret Reed Memorial Fund for Seminarians at the Westminster Church, 240 Tiburon Blvd., Tiburon or to a favorite charity.
