Rear Adm. ROY DEAN WILLIAMS
A funeral was held for retired Navy Rear Adm. Roy Dean Williams, a Kentfield resident.
Mr. Williams, who was awarded a Bronze Star in World War II, died Friday at his home after a long illness. He was 83.
A 1924 graduate of the Naval Academy, Mr. Williams served 31 years in the Navy and commanded a division of destroyer escorts during World War II. He took part in landings on Okinawa and other Pacific islands.
He retired in 1955 and then worked for several glass companies in San Rafael.
A widower, he is survived by a son, retired Rear Adm. Allen Dean Williams of La Costa, San Diego County; a daughter, Carol Waterbury of Sacramento; three brothers, Pere Williams of New Mexico and Charles and Cecil Williams, both of Baudette, Minn.; a sister, Evelyn Jesme of Baudette; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial was at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael. The family requested that donations be made to the Navy Relief Society in Washington, D.C., or to the American Heart Fund.
