STEVEN SKLOOT
Steven Skloot of Mill Valley, who worked as a photographer, filmmaker and toy store owner and was involved in many human needs organizations, died Wednesday at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Skloot, 42, was born in New York and moved to Mill Valley 12 years ago.
In New York, he had been a film production manager and assistant director for such movies as “The Godfather,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Tomorrow” and many James Bond films.
When he came to California, he changed his career and opened the Mill Valley Toy Store, which sold imported wooden items for children.
After he sold the shop, he became a photographer and, for a time, took photos for the San Francisco Foundation. He also took pictures for the Novato Human Needs Organization and the Halleck Creek Riding Club for Handicapped Children.
He was involved in Beyond War, Ground Zero and Educators for Social Responsibility.
“He was involved in lots of human rights deeds,” said his wife, Esther. “He wanted to right all the wrongs in the world. He always tried to help and do good.”
For a year, he and his family lived in a kibbutz in Israel.
Survivors are his wife; two sons, Tal and Ori Skloot; a daughter, Shira Skloot, all of the family home in Mill Valley; his parents, Milton and Gussie Skloot of New York; and a brother, Michael Skloot of New York.
A graveside service was planned for 1:30 p.m. today at the Daphne-Fernwood Cemetery in Mill Valley.
The family has asked that memorial gifts be sent to the Halleck Creek Riding Club, P.O. Box 581, Inverness.
