Col. CLAUDE P. ‘BROWNIE’ JOYCE

Retired Col. Claude P. “Brownie” Joyce of San Rafael, who served 28 years in the Army Corps of Engineers, died Tuesday at Kaiser Hospital in San Rafael. He was 76.

Col. Joyce had lived in Marin 26 years and for 10 years taught math at Petaluma Junior High School.

He was born in Garland, Texas, and was raised in Dallas.

He was a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he studied electrical engineering and earned his commission.

During World War II, Col. Joyce was commanding officer of the Engineering Corps that build airfields in Burma, India and China.

After the war, he headed several Army projects, including construction of bases.

He retired from the Presidio of San Francisco in 1962 and began teaching. He retired from that career in the early 1970s.

Col. Joyce was a member of the Presidio Golf Club and a charter member of the yacht club at the Presidio.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Joyce of San Rafael.

At his request, no services will be held.

The family prefers memorial contributions to the American Kidney Fund.
