JOHN ARTHUR MERCER

A Mass of Christian Burial for John Arthur Mercer of Sausalito, a television script writer and advertising man, will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Notre Dame des Victoires Catholic Church in San Francisco.

Mr. Mercer, 52, died Friday at his resident after an illness.

He was a native of the Bronx, N.Y., was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in New York and of Fordham University.

His career as a writer began in New York City with the New York Comedy Workshop. He wrote scripts for the Sergeant Bilko Show, the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Twilight Zone. Mr. Mercer then entered the advertising business in New York with Young and Rubicam. Later, he worked in San Francisco at Meltzer, Aron and Lemen and Cunningham and Walsh.

In 1968, Mr. Mercer became a television consultant to political candidates, working for the campaign groups of Ronald Reagan and others.

In San Francisco, he became a senior vice president and creative director of Doyle Dane Bernbach Inc. Advertising, which he joined in 1984. Under his leadership, the agency’s creative department won 26 awards in 1985 for advertising excellence.

He also had an active interest in the study and preservation of the Miwok Indian heritage. A lover of plants, Mr. Mercer belonged to the American Fern Society, the International Palm Society and Friends of the University of California Botanical Gardens.

He was past president of San Francisco Copyrighters’ Club and of the San Francisco Society of Communications Arts.

Mr. Mercer is survived by his wife, Janet Mercer of Sausalito; two sons, John Henry Mercer and David Mercer of Santa Rosa; a daughter, Linda Mercer of Santa Rosa; a sister, Jane Rozett of Macon, Ga.; and his stepmother, Augusta Mercer of Bronx.

Burial will be private.

The family prefers memorial gifts to Fordham University, 113 W 60th St., New York, N.Y., 10023.
