Anton Korbel, Aged Pioneer, Died Friday

Anton F. Korbel, aged 84 years, pioneer lumber man and wine grape grower, died at his home in this city last Friday after a brief illness.

Korbel with several other pioneers arrived in San Francisco away back in 1862, from Bohemia and immediately went to work as a mechanic in the First Street Iron Foundry. The virgin forests in the Humboldt region attracted him as being a source of great wealth and he, with a brother, left for that section. They soon organized the Humboldt Lumber Company with camps in Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt counties.

In order to handle the lumber and his huge sawmill plant, Korbel built the Arcata-Mad river railroad into the mountain and over this route lumber and logs wre transported to the coast.

The deceased leaves a widow, four daughters and two sons; the daughters are Olga, Martha and Elsa Korbel, and Mrs. T. C. Mellesh; the sons are Joseph and Leo.

The funeral was held Monday in San Francisco from the Masonic Temple at Van Ness and Oak streets, the services being under the auspices of California Commandery No. 1, of which the deceased had long been a member. The remains while laying in state at the Korbel residence, San Francisco, were viewed by numerous friends of the family.
