Dr. MAX RUKES

A memorial service is being planned for Dr. Max Rukes of Corte Madera, a longtime physician and an inventor of the kidney dialysis machine.

Dr. Rukes died Monday at his home after being ill in recent years. He was 65.

Friends said Dr. Rukes had been considered a nominee for the Nobel Prize in medicine because of his work on the lifesaving machine.

He was associated with Stanford Hospital while he developed the equipment.

Dr. Rukes, who specialized in internal medicine, also maintained a private practice for many years in San Francisco. Associates said he usually carried a caseload of only 50 patients so he could maintain a close relationship with each one.

He also worked at the Fort Miley Veterans Hospital on a government-sponsored study on the effects of chemicals.

He is survived by several brothers and sisters.

Arrangements are being handled by the Neptune Society in San Rafael.
