CULLIE MANNING Jr.
Retired deputy sheriff
Cullie Carlton Manning Jr. of Novato, a retired deputy sheriff for Marin County, died after a long illness Jan. 31. He was 81.
Mr. Manning was born in New London, Conn., in 1916. He served in the Army and settlled in Marin County after he was transferred to Hamilton Air Force Base. He retired at the rank of sergeant.
In 1942, he became a Marin deputy sheriff and worked at San Quentin Prison until 1972.
He had a second career working for Fairchild. He retired in 1981.
He enjoyed outdoor activities, including camping.
Mr. Manning was a member of the Marin Rod and Gun Club and the Novato Historical Guild, where he served on the board of directors for five years. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows for more than 53 years and was a past Noble Grand and served as treasurer.
Mr. Manning is survived by his children, Robert Manning Jr. of Calpella, Judy Kutchback of Novato, George Fraser of San Bernardino and Jesse Fraser of Novato; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary Chapel, 2500 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary and Cemetery, San Rafael.
