PHILIP ROEDEL

A private service will be held for Philip M. Roedel of Novato, a retired fisheries expert who died March 29 at home of cancer. He was 71.

Mr. Roedel, a California native, had lived in Marin for four years.

He was former director of the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Services.

Mr. Roedel held biology degrees from Stanford University and had worked as a marine biologist at the California State Fisheries Laboratory for many years. He then got involved in the administration and management of living marine resources.

Mr. Roedel also traveled extensively in developing nations and participated in many international conferences on fisheries matters.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; a son, David Roedel; a daughter, Deborah Christadore; and three grandchildren.

His family asked that memorial contributions go to the American Cancer Society.
