Rev. GERALD S. MOYER
A funeral for the Rev. Gerald S. Moyer, a longtime Marin resident and Baptist minister, was to be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mill Valley.
Rev. Moyer, 81, died Saturday at his home in Corte Madera after a brief illness.
Two years ago, he celebrated 50 years in the ministry.
He was born in Old Austin, Ark., and came to Marin in 1955 to found the First Baptist Church of Corte Madera, now the Corte Madera Community Church.
When he retired from the Corte Madera church in 1964, Rev. Moyer set up a pioneer church service in which he temporarily headed churches that had lost their pastors.
“He would go in to help them through a difficult time,” said his son, Gerald A. Moyer of Mill Valley.
He served in churches throughout Northern California and as far away as Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Rev. Moyer was a member of the American Baptist Churches of the U.S.A. in Valley Forge, Pa., the American Baptist Churches of the West in Oakland and was dean of the Interim Ministry Association of the American Baptist Churches of the West.
He also is survived by his wife, Loie V. Moyer; two sons, David E. Moyer of Oakland and Richard A. Moyer of Mill Valley; two sisters, Blanche Lindley of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Jeanette Holiman of Crossett, Ark.; a brother, Eugene Moyer of Little Rock, Ark; and four grandchildren.
Burial will be at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael.
The family prefers memorial contributions to the camping program of the American Baptist Churches of the West, 268 Grand Ave., Oakland.
