WALTER T. WINTER

Walter T. Winter of Tiburon, a pioneer in the specialization in divorce law, died unexpectedly Monday at his home. He was 54.

Mr. Winter, the son of a rabbi, was born in Berlin and fled the Nazis in 1939. His family first went to Shanghai and t hen to the United States. He was reared in San Francisco and Oakland and had lived in Marin for the past 25 years.

Mr. Winter graduated from the City College of San Francisco and Golden Gate College School of Law. He put himself through law school at night by working days as a stockbroker.

A certified specialist in family law, Mr. Winter was a member of the State Bar of California, San Francisco Bar Association and Domestic Relations Committee of the San Francisco Lawyers Club. He also was a past president of the California chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

He appeared frequently on television and radio, argued a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court that secured pension pension benefits for divorced military spouses, wrote several books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles about divorce and lectured for the California Continuing Education of the Bar, California Trial Lawyers Association and Practical Law Courses.

He is survived by his former wife, Linda Winter of Tiburon; a son, David M. Winter of Tiburon; a daughter, Wendy H. Winter of Tiburon; and a brother, Rabbi Fritz Winter of Montevideo, Uruguay.

At his request, no service will be held. His ashes will be scattered at sea.

Mr. Winter’s family asked that memorial contributions go to a favorite charity.
