KATHERINE E. DeBRECHT

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Novato for Katherine E. DeBrecht of Novato, a retired nurse with the Reed Union School District.

Mrs. DeBrecht died Wednesday at Kaiser Hospital in Terra Linda after a brief illness. She was 69.

She was born in Medford, Ore., and came to California at an early age. She was graduated from Stanford School of Nursing as a registered nurse and later earned a master’s degree from San Francisco State University.

Mrs. DeBrecht and her husband, Eugene DeBrecht, were married on May 29, 1937, and celebrated the event by becoming among the first people to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge on its opening day.

The DeBrechts later moved to Marin County and both worked for school districts. Mrs. DeBrecht became district nurse for the Reed district while her husband eventually became assistant superintendent of the Novato School District.

They both retired in May 1973.

Mrs. DeBrecht was a past president of the American Association of University Women, Novato Branch, and the School Nurses Organization of Marin County.

She also was active in the Sierra Club and t he Marin Canoe Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Dr. Katherine Gallagher of Walnut Creek; two sons, Robert DeBrecht of New York City and Kenneth DeBrecht of Santa Rosa, and five grandchildren.

Her ashes will be scattered over Mount Whitney, where Mrs. DeBrecht came within a matter of feet from the crest during a hike last year.

The family prefers that memorial contributions [go] to the American Cancer Society or the donor’s favorite charity
