Life Ends for Miss Bessie M. Keys

Final respects to Miss Bessie M. Keys, 75, of Tomales, the last member of one of the coast’s pioneer families, were paid at funeral services Tuesday in Petaluma.

Miss Keys died Saturday morning of a stroke in a Petaluma hospital. She was stricken suddenly at the home of an old friend, Mrs. Margaret Hamlin in Petaluma, where she had been residing.

The late Miss Keys graduated from the old Notre Dame convent in San Jose. She had won recognition with her paintings. She was the daughter of John Keys who emigrated from Ireland in 1841, settling in St. Louis, Mo. In 1850, he came to Smith’s ranch, Bodega, Sonoma county. Her mother was a daughter of Jas. Miller, for whom historic Miller hall in Marin was named.

Miss Keys’ death follows that of her sister, Edith Keys, which occurred April 7, of this year at the same hospital from a stroke. After the death of her sister, she left the family home in Tomales where she was born, and where her paintings adorned its walls. She was a cultured and educated woman, a devout Catholic and a member of the Tomales church choir for many years.

Deceased was the sister of the late Minnie M., Edith A., George T., John M., and James W. Keys, a former San Rafael attorney.
