FRANCIS P. SHAFER

A memorial service for Francis P. Shafer, retired assistant principal of Sir Francis Drake High School, will be held at 3 p.m. May 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in San Anselmo.

Mr. Shafer, who was 74, died April 13 in Los Altos after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Shafer had a long association with the Tamalpais School District. He was born in San Francisco but moved to Marin as a child. He attended the old San Anselmo Main School and then Tamalpais High School, where he was student body president and an all-round athlete.

He then went on to the College of Marin, where he also was elected student body president.

After earning a degree and teacher’s credentials at the University of California at Berkeley, he returned to Tamalpais High School to teach Spanish and history and coach golf, football and track.

He was administrator of the adult education program in the district for a time in the early 1950s. He was named assistant principal of Drake High School in 1953, a position he held until his retirement in 1972.

He had served with the Navy as a lieutenant during World War II in the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Mr. Shafer enjoyed sports and the out-of-doors and was a member of the Marian Rod and Gun Club.

He lived in San Anselmo until 1974, when he and his wife, Eunice, moved to Novato. After her death in 1982, Mr. Shafer moved to a retirement complex in Sunnyvale near the home of his daughter and her family.

Mr. Shafer was a member of Sons in Retirement Branch 7 and of the Marin Division of the California Retired Teachers Association.

He is survived by his daughter, Joan Hare of Sunnyvale; his brother, Allen Shafer of Colfax; and three grandchildren.

A scholarship in memory of Mr. Shafer has been established at Drake High School. Donations may be sent to the Drake Scholarship Foundation Shafer Fund, Sir Francis Drake High School, San Anselmo, 94960. Tax deductible checks may be made payable to Drake Scholarship Foundation.
