Death of Mrs. J. J. Reed
Mrs. Carlota Laurez (sic) Reed, widow of the late John J. Reed, of Reed’s station, Marin County, died very suddenly at San Quentin on the afternoon of Thursday, July 19th.
Mrs. Reed, accompanied by her niece, Miss Irne (sic) Estinoza (sic), of Sausalito had gone to the prison to seek an interview with a young man recently incarcerated, with a view of aiding the unfortunate youth. She arrived after the hour for admission of visitors and exerted herself in going from one officer to another, trying to get permission to see the prisoner.
She fell in a swoon at the prison gate, and was dead in a few minutes. Physicians worked for an hour in efforts to restore her to consciousness.
Mrs. Reed was born in Mazatlan, Mexico, but belonged to one of the old Spanish families of California. She was a woman of fine character, and given to charity. She has lived in Marin county for fifty years, and was known and respected by an extensive acquaintance. She leaves a son John P. Reed, and a daughter, Miss Clotilda Reed.
The funeral will be on Monday morning, July 14th, from her home at Reed’s station, the cortege leaving the house at 9:30, by special train, and arriving at the Union station in San Rafael at 9:46. A solemn requiem mass will be said in St. Raphael’s church, for the repose of her soul, and the interment will be in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery.
Mrs. Reed’s funeral was one of the largest ever held in this city; every vehicle that could be procured was engaged and two car loads of friends came on the special train that brought the body from the home to the church. The floral offerings were very elaborate, and the state casket was covered with a pall of white roses.
The honorary pall bearers were William Kelly, Judge Angellotti, Thomas P. Boyd, William Boyd, G. Pecheco (sic), Peter Crane, S. H. Cheda and Steve Richardson. A requiem high mass was said for the repose of the soul, Father Land being the celebrant, assisted by Fathers Foley, Tozzi and Valentini, the latter of Sausalito. Father Foley delivered the eulogy, paying a beautiful tribute to the life of this saintly woman.
The remains were laid to rest in the family vault in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery near the husband, who passed away fourteen years ago.
