OLIVE GILBERT

A memorial service for Olive Stewart Deming Gilbert of San Rafael will be held at 1 p.m. today at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael.

Mrs. Gilbert died Friday at the Northgate Convalescent Hospital in San Rafael after a lengthy illness. She was 86.

She was born in Van Buren, Ark., and had lived in Oklahoma and Mexico before moving to San Francisco many years ago.

Mrs. Gilbert moved to San Rafael 25 years ago, intentionally choosing a neighborhood with many children. Neighbors said youngsters called her the “grandmarm” of the neighborhood.

She had a master’s degree in English from the University of Arkansas and had worked as an executive secretary for Dean Witter and F. C. Hock Properties in San Francisco.

She was also known as a genealogist and had been working on a book on clans in recent years. She was an active member of the San Francisco chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and served as the group’s regent in 1958-59.

Mrs. Gilbert was an avid gardener and was past president of the Marin branch of the American Fuchsia Society and past secretary for the Marin Chrysanthemum Society.

She was also a member and past treasurer of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in San Rafael.

Mrs. Gilbert had also been an avid horsewoman and lover of animals.

Her husband, Harold S. S. Gilbert, died in 1977.

Inurnment will be at Forest Park Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ark. Memorial contributions can be made to a favorite charity.
