JANET HENDERSON CLEAR
Janet Henderson Clear, a longtime Sausalito resident and former reporter for the old Oakland Post-Enquirer and San Francisco News, died of cancer Wednesday at Marin General Hospital.
Mrs. Clear, 63, had been active in efforts to control community growth in Sausalito.
She was born and grew up in Alameda. She had earned a bachelor’s degree in English and had taught junior high school in Richmond for a time.
She then returned to school to study journalism at the University of California at Berkeley. She was believed to be one of the first women to graduate from the school’s journalism program.
“She was a wonderful, bright woman,” said her husband, C. Gerald Clear.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Catherine Clear of Berkeley and Ellen Clear of Washington, D.C.; two stepsons, Michael Clear of Trenton, N.J., and Robert Clear of Berkeley; two brothers, Malcolm Henderson of Baton Rouge, La., and Dorward Henderson of Alameda; and one grandchild.
A private memorial service is planned.
The family prefers memorial donations to the Save the Children Federation, 48 Wilton Road, Westport, Conn., 06880, or to the University of California at Berkeley.
