EDWARD STAIRS, JOHN REILLY
Two Men Drown Off Point San Pedro
Shortly after Thursday noon, EDWARD STAIRS, aged 25, and JOHN REILLY, aged 27, two workmen employed by the Daniels Construction Co. at McNear's Point, were drowned off Point San Pedro while making a line fast to a skiff which was drifting out to sea. Up to the present time, their bodies have not been recovered.
The accident occurred soon after the dinner hour. The two men, while walking along the beach, saw a skiff drifting away from her moorings. Immediately they jumped into a small boat and began to row toward the larger one, intent on towing it back to the wharf from which it had broken loose.
While they were making a line fast to the second boat, a comber struck their craft, knocking them both into the water. Neither of the men could swim, and they drowned within a few minutes.
The men came here from San Francisco 2 weeks ago.
