RAY W. MURPHY
Ray W. Murphy, 66, a former chief ranger at the Point Reyes National Seashore, died Monday at his Novato home after a long illness.
He was born in Yosemite and began his career as a ranger in the national park there.
He also had worked as a ranger at Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Olympic national parks.
During World War II, he served in the Navy.
From 1966 to 1970, Mr. Murphy was a visitor’s protection specialist in the San Francisco office of the National Park Service.
He served as chief ranger at Point Reyes National Seashore from 1971 to 1974 and as a ranger for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area from 1974 to 1977. Shortly thereafter he accepted the post of chief ranger for the Marin Municipal Water District. He retired in 1984.
He was an honorary member of the Mounted Sheriff’s Posse of Marin, a special deputy sheriff of Marin, a member of the Tamalpais Trail Riders, Tamalpais Conservation Club and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Novato Ward.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Murphy of Novato; five daughters, Christine Guttierrez of Fillmore, Ventura County, Cheryl Talley of Utah, Erin Anderson of Petaluma, Mary Murphy of Novato and Erma Murphy of the University of California at Davis; three sons, Ray Murphy of Paradise, Butte County, Matthew Murphy of New York and Duane Murphy of Novato; two brothers, Warren Murphy of Seattle, Wash., and George Murphy of Mount Vernon, Wash.; a sister, Erma Fitzpatrick of Canada; and 12 grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Novato.
The family prefers memorial contributions to Hospice of Marin or the Mission Fund for the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Novato.
