DOROTHY EXLEY
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Exley of San Rafael will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Church in San Francisco.
Mrs. Exley died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1987, at the Hillside Manor Convalescent Hospital in San Rafael. She was 77.
In a 1980 interview with the Marin Independent Journal, Mrs. Exley said it made her blue to remember the days when her six children were young. “They were so darling, and I taught them to be sweet and dear with one another. I wish those days were back.”
At the convalescent home, she said, “I make the best of everything. You make your own happiness. It has to come from within yourself.”
What kept her going, she said, was the realization “that someday I’ll see God. I plan to tell St. Peter, ‘I don’t care where you put me in heaven. You can put me in a corner, just let me in.’”
Mrs. Exley is survived by her husband, John G. Exley, a retired painting contractor; three daughters, Patricia Nyberg of Fairfax, Sherryl Exley of Petaluma and Kathleen Poole of San Francisco; a son, Ralph Exley of San Rafael; and 11 grandchildren. Two sons, John Exley and Robert Exley, died earlier.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.
Her family asked that memorial contributions go to St. Anthony’s Dining Room in San Francisco.
