Melancholy Engineer Commits Suicide
Saturday night at about 10 o’clock nightwatchman Glass of the U. S. Coaling station at California city in the rounds of his duty, heard some thing splash. Going to the edge of the wharf he discerned something while floating past and immediately called out to the other watchman who responded. It was thought to be refuse thrown out by the cook and no further notice was given it.
Sunday George Franklin Reed, an electrical engineer for the coaling station, was found missing. He had been suffering with an attack of acute melancholia and had been closely watch (sic) by his family lest he should take his life. After dragging the immediate water all day Sunday the body was found Monday morning at 10 o’clock.
The deceased was a native of New York, 39 years of age and is survived by a wife, Bioley Reed, and a small son.
